Fashion: - noun

  1. a popular or the latest style of clothing, hair, decoration, or behaviour.

Childhood

Most of the things I do now as an adult links back to things I enjoyed when i was a child, from baking and cooking, to organising and collecting, albeit I was never really into fashion since I wore the clothe my mum told me and just styled them in my own way. I was never into keeping up to date on designers, trends, models etc, this could be due to the fact i didn't see anyone like me in the fashion industry but that is a whole different conversation.

Education

In secondary school I went through a lot of different career ideas; i believe they were all a perfect fit, There was always a parallel to the subject I enjoyed -Music- and the job I wanted to have -singer- . Luckily I went to a really good comprehensive school and they really encourage you to do the area you enjoy. And that what I did when it came to picking my GCSE. As this is My Journey to Fashion and not My Journey to My Life you just need to know that I chose to do textiles, not because I like clothes or I wanted to be in the fashion industry but because I love sewing, I found it captivating and relaxing to be able to create something from nothing.

When it come to picking my a levels I was adamant that I was going to study philosophy because my RE teacher was amazing and really help me see there are so many theories and ideas in this world as well as different ways of life to live.

My biggest issue was that I wanted to study Religious studies, Philosophy, Sociology, Psychology, Ethics and maybe textiles. My guidance counselor told me I personally shouldn't try and make all of my opinion essay based subjects as it would be hard for me to manage. Hearing that I was gutted purely because I had my heart set on studying them all. After a long process of I decided to study Philosophy, Psychology, Textiles and lucky dip (the last subject was different for each school)

After going to different sixth form open days, I was only left with a few more when i decided, much to my mum's dismay, i went to a collage open day and I found an art and design fine arts course. It was way more immersive than the textiles course i sure at the other sixth forms. This fine arts course angled most of their work into creating actual garments. The only problem was it was worth two or three of your a levels subjects and as usual Abigail was at a cross roads again.

My best friend and I sat down and spoke through my options and decided that this college would be the best for me as i will still be able to do philosophy and sew until my heart is content, I was ecstatic.

On my check in with my counselor I told her that i had applied and I got a conditional off to this college and she advised for me not to go to this college just because it is hard to concentrate there. She saw how excited i seem when i was talking about the fine arts course she told me to give her some time and she will find similar course.

She later came back to me with a fashion college that taught Fashion Design which was a step further that just Art and Design and i was so excited because it seemed like more sewing at the same time I was gutted that I wouldn’t be able to do philosophy so I left it to God, I said i’ll apply to this Fashion College, if i get accepted ill go if i don’t ill go to the college.

I got accepted

For the next two years I studied fashion design and honestly I disliked it so much just because I am not a designer but I learnt a lot of information that I still use till this day.

This blog post is already long enough so i’ll round it up. When I was nearing the end of my college Diploma I had the option to go to uni and once again i left it to God, I'll go if i get in. Knowing that I wanted to continue with Fashion but more of the making side, My sister and i found courses i could do around the UK.

Abigail.
