I’m pretty late but I’ve only recently sat down to watch this documentary “Surviving R.Kelly”
American cultural critic Dream Hampton, has produced what I think is a great piece of work. Shining an extremely bright light on R’N’B singer Robert “R.Kelly” Kelly.
A plethora of people came out to speak on the singers exploits of extremely young women, sexually. This is something that has been known to the world for a little over a decade now. But society have continued to “sweep it under the rug”.
Let’s not forget about the pissing scandal of 2002. Something he didn’t go to court for until 2008. Or something that I recently found out about, marrying the now deceased R’N’B artist Aaliyah when she was 15 and falsifying a marriage certificate to claim she was 18.
If I’m being honest, there was A LOT of shit that came to the forefront while watching the show, that I had absolutely no idea about. I already knew Robert was a sick fuck but the documentary informed me on just how sick the man is.
What really surprised me though is how long the law and society as a whole have been enabling Robert to do the nonsense he’s been doing. I remember growing up watching comedy sketches of R.Kelly’s exploits. The urinating on a minor incident as well as sleeping with minors too.
All that exposure/coverage and the man was still walking around a free man? Even still touring, making money. Back then it didn’t make any sense to me. But now, it’s clear…
With the right amount of money, there are so many things you can get away with.
No matter how deranged or sickening it is.
It’s upsetting but, that’s the world we live in. This whole thing only adds more fuel to the ME TOO movement fire.
Moreover, being able to evade the clutches of the law this long WAS NOT a solo effort. Robert definitely has a “ring” or a cult if you will. Of people just as if not sicker than he was. People with power in high places that have taken advantage of that fact. These people weren’t only enabling Robert, but were participating and are just as guilty as he is.
Human beings are disgusting, each day I learn this more and more. Even till now you still have people defending the man. But that only shows where their heads are at, as well as their stance on abuse.
But anyway, it’s only a matter of time before Robert gets what he deserves. The only question I have now is:
When will the law finally come knocking?
